THEA 308-600 – Shakespeare's London

A Summer 2018 Faculty-Led Study Abroad Theatre Arts Course in London, England

This course is designed for UNC students to explore Shakespeare’s London. Twenty to twenty-five students will travel to London summer 2018 to see Shakespeare plays performed at the Shakespeare’s Globe Theater in London and by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. To immerse students more fully into English culture, students will also attend additional theatrical productions in the West End, participate in pre-show and post-show lectures and explore museums, art galleries, and castles.

Prior to leaving for London, each student will be asked to participate in an online preparation module. This module will include the following tasks: reading and watching a performance video of each of the plays the student will see in performance in London, analyzing selected literary criticism, exploring online resources that focus on the history of London theater, and read and watch video background information on Shakespeare.

Before leaving for London, the course would be hybrid:

  • Students will be expected to complete the readings, watch selected performance videos, participate in discussion boards and complete any online exercises.
  • The class will meet as a group for at least two sessions prior to departure for London.

The course is designed to appeal primarily to Theater Arts majors.
