NURS 401 / 501 – Global Health & Disaster Preparedness in the West Indies

A Summer 2018 Faculty-Led Study Abroad Experience in Saint Kitts & Nevis

Islands at the Edge of the Caribbean Sea / Atlantic Ocean

This interdisciplinary study abroad courses (undergraduate and graduate course options are available) will explore concepts in global health and disaster preparedness using St. Kitts and Nevis as a microcosm to explore these concepts. These courses are letter graded.

Students will study...

  • The local culture and nuances of health care in the West Indies.
  • Fundamentals of public health, personal preparedness, emergency care and the infrastructure for disaster preparedness to St. Kitts and Nevis, two small countries vulnerable to natural disasters.
  • The impact of culture on population health.
  • Public health initiatives in the St. Kitts and Nevis communities and how programs and policy options support individual and population health improvement.
  • The roles of history, power, privilege, and structural inequality in producing health disparities.
  • Public health in the context of the diverse cultural values and traditions of the West Indies compared to the U.S.
  • Social justice and human rights principles related to community needs.

Course objectives for these topics differ slightly between the undergraduate and graduate courses. Please review the syllabus for details.

Undergraduate Students

UNC Degree Seeking

Current UNC students can register for this course. You must have 24 credit hours completed by the time of departure with a minimum GPA of 2.5, and a clean disciplinary record at UNC. Spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis for eligible applicants.

UNC Non-Degree Seeking

If you are not seeking a degree at UNC, but have earned a GED or high school diploma, you may take a course for personal interest or to transfer to another college or university. Please note, as a non-degree seeking student, you are not eligible for Financial Aid.

Graduate Students

If any prerequisites are required, they will be listed above. Prerequisites require an instructor override in advance of your registration in Ursa. Please contact the instructor before registering to provide proof of completion of the prerequisite course. Other UNC staff are not able to assist with prerequisite overrides for registration.

UNC Degree Seeking Students

Current UNC graduate students can register for this course.

UNC Non-Degree Seeking Students

Non-degree seeking graduate status refers to a student who has at least a Bachelor's degree and has either applied to our Graduate School and not yet been admitted or is wanting to take classes but not pursue a degree. Please note, as a non-degree seeking student, you are not eligible for Financial Aid.

Participating in an FLSA Program/Course
  1. Speak with your advisor, parents and/or guardian about the best course and program for you.
  2. Download and complete the Application using the link above.
  3. You will need to have the Disciplinary Verification Form portion of the application signed by the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (part of the Dean of Students Office). Please allow them up to 24 hours to verify and sign this form for you.
  4. Return the completed application along with the required deposit to the Extended Campus office in Michener by the application deadline.
  5. Attend all required meetings for the FLSA.
  6. TRAVEL ABROAD AND ENJOY!!
Deposit

A nonrefundable deposit (via credit card or a check written out to the University of Northern Colorado) is due at the time of application. Deposits are non-refundable and signify your commitment to participate in the course. Once you commit to participate, UNC may begin to make logistical arrangements on your behalf that may include non-recoverable costs. UNC will attempt to recover funds expended or committed on your behalf if you decide to withdraw, but any non-recoverable costs to UNC (charged by airlines, third party vendors, tour operators, etc.) will be paid with your deposit.

Your full deposit will only be returned if you are not accepted for the course or if the course is canceled.

Once You register

Billing and Payment for Your Course

  • You will submit a deposit with your application packet. This deposit is non-refundable if you are accepted to the course, but will be refunded if your application is not accepted.
  • You will be billed for the remaining program cost via the billing schedule for the term in which the course is delivered.
  • Course materials costs (textbooks, etc.) are assessed and paid separately.
  • To view or pay your bill, please visit the Bursar’s website for specific instructions on accessing your bill. You will not receive a bill in the mail; UNC has an ebill system.
