Educational Studies EdD – Innovation and Education Reform Cognate – Eligibility & Transfer Credit

Admission Requirements

  • Minimum GRE score (taken within the last five years) of: 140 Quantitative, 146 Verbal Reasoning, and a combined score of at least 297 with an analytic writing minimum of 3.5. Test scores must be sent directly to the graduate school by the testing agency. UNC's institutional code is R4074.
  • You must possess a master's degree from a regionally-accredited college or university, with a 3.0 GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale) on your most recently completed degree.

Eligibility by State

At this time, UNC has secured approval to serve online education to students from every state and the U.S. Virgin Islands via our participation in NC-SARA and some additional state-by-state authorizations. However, we are not currently accepting students to our online programs who reside in Puerto Rico or the CNMIs. Due to how fluid these agreements can be at the state or federal level, we recommend checking our Eligibility by State page for details.

International Students

Denver Center + Online Delivery Option

Though international students can attend many UNC Extended Campus programs, this delivery of this program is not well-suited for international students due to U.S. immigration requirements concerning the ratio of credit hours that international students must take in the classroom setting compared to how many credits are taken in online courses (immigration counts partially online courses as online).

International students may also be interested in the Online + Summer Loveland Visits delivery or the on-campus program.

Online + SUmmer Loveland Visits Delivery Option

International students residing outside of the United States are eligible to apply to our online programs. Applicants for online programs must demonstrate English proficiency in order to be considered. Possible ways to demonstrate proficiency:

  • Qualifying test scores: TOEFL: 80, IELTS: 7.0, PTE-A: 54
  • Completion of a degree in the U.S., or from an English speaking country (parts of Europe, Canada), within the last two years.

For this program, you do not need to submit financial documentation with your initial application. You will need to submit financial documentation about 6-8 weeks in advance each time before you plan to come to the U.S. for your coursework. The financial documentation needs to demonstrate that you can cover the cost of tuition and living expenses for the time period that you will be in the U.S. This is so that we can issue a DS-2019 for you to be able to apply for a J1 visa.

Transferring Credit

Applicable graduate credit with a grade of A or B from an accredited university may be able to be applied towards this academic program. Doctoral students must complete a minimum of 40 semester hours through UNC of the 64 minimum required for a doctoral degree. If the program requirements exceed the 64 credit minimum, students are allowed to transfer additional credits, as determined by their advisor. Students are encouraged to check school/department policies regarding transfer of credit.

Students must submit an original transcript to their advisor for review. Student and advisor then complete a Transfer of Credit form to submit along with the original transcript to the Grad School for review and final approval. All work counted in a doctoral degree program must be completed within eight years. The time limit is calculated from the beginning of the first class transferred in and counted in the degree program.

A student who possesses a specialist degree may count a maximum of 21 semester hours of specialist work in the doctoral program with the approval of the Graduate School, the program advisor, and all members of the doctoral committee. Schools may have requirements that exceed the minimums established by the university.
