Introduction to Infant & Early Mental Health
A Spring 2021 Online Special Education Course
These undergraduate and graduate course options are designed to introduce undergraduate students — or counselor candidates, teacher candidates, and other related professional candidates — to the field of infant and early childhood mental health. This includes social and emotional development, screening, assessment and intervention, brain development, the effects of toxic stress and trauma on brain development, the role of responsive caregiving as a mitigating factor for adverse conditions, and professional areas of development such as reflective practice and infant mental health endorsement.
This course will combine learning, readings, and application of knowledge to a case study through scheduled online course hours, with related assignments.
This course is letter graded. More details about course outcomes and requirements are available in the draft of the syllabus for each course.
