Elementary Bond Science Institute

A Summer 2023 Workshop for Elementary Teachers

Delivered in partnership with the Poudre Learning Center in Greeley.

The Bond Science Institute for Elementary Teachers is an institute that will develop teachers understanding of 3-dimensional science instruction through the lens of the Next Generation Science Standards and Colorado Content Standards. The Institute will also explore science content, inquiry-based instruction, integration of other content areas into science instruction and STEM/STEAM lessons. Learn about how to use the outdoors to extend learning for students!

Course Objectives

Develop a deeper knowledge of science instruction, objectives, learning, curriculum, safety, technology, and assessment for teaching science grades K-8.

  • To examine science as "a way of knowing" through dialog and experiencing scientific inquiry via activities, reading, and discussion.
  • To develop an understanding of how people learn in the context of scientific discovery and current brain research.
  • To provide models for conducting inquiry-based investigations.
  • To provide models of instruction for integrating science with other content areas.
  • To provide content necessary to enable teacher licensure students to address K-12 Colorado Academic Standards (CAS) and an awareness of the Next Generation Science Standards.
  • To explore ways for teachers to introduce students to science argumentation strategies including Claims, Evidence, Reasoning and Sense Making Circles.

Course is letter graded.

    Graduate Students

    UNC Degree-Seeking Students

    Current UNC graduate students can register for this course.

    Non-Degree-Seeking Students

    Non-degree-seeking graduate status refers to a student who has earned at least a bachelor's degree and who either:

    • Has applied to UNC Graduate School and not yet been admitted or;
    • Wishes to take this graduate class but not pursue a degree.

    Please note, as a non-degree seeking student, you are not eligible for federal financial aid.

    Note: UNC student immunization policies will apply to your enrollment. See the current UNC vaccination policy and directions. If you enroll for a fully online course, please contact debra.miller@unco.edu after your enrollment to request that the immunization requirement be removed.

    Step 2 - Register with UNC

    If you are notified of acceptance, you will then register for the course through UNC:

    • Step 1 of this process can take up to 1-3 days turnaround time, so we recommend you start the process in advance of the "add/register by" deadline posted on this page.

  • Once You Register

    Dropping and Withdrawing

    If you wish to drop or withdraw from the course, you must do so on or before the deadline dates listed in the Course Basics box.

    • If you are registered for any other courses in the same academic term, you can drop or withdraw within your Ursa account.
