Designing & Building an Online Course (Formerly TAO)

Summer 2019 Course for UNC Faculty, Staff & Students

This course enables participants to apply instructional design principles and best practices in online learning as they plan and build an online course that meets Quality Matters standards.

Participants will incorporate online learning pedagogy, standards, and best practices into their course design to produce a quality product. You will need to have available course content from which to build your course.

After this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the roles and responsibilities of an online instructor and assess your own strengths and challenges in this area.
  • Use Canvas as a student to gain the student perspective.
  • Apply QM standards and best practices to the design and development of an online course.
  • Choose appropriate materials and tools to accomplish your instructional objectives.
  • Implement online pedagogy in the areas of instructor presence, communication and assessment.
  • Use Canvas to build (upload) a course.

    This course is provided for UNC faculty, staff and admitted students.

    Admitted Graduate Students

    Current UNC graduate students can register for this course.

    Note for Admitted TIP Students

    This course is an excellent practical-application course option for your graduate program, and is offered at a lower cost per credit than a typical graduate course.

    Admitted Undergraduate Students

    Juniors and seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher are permitted to take 500-level courses.

    Tuition Reimbursement for UNC Employees

    This course qualifies for the credit hours that are available to UNC permanent and adjunct faculty members, professional administrative exempt and classified staff, and officers (based on your annualized FTE).     You will need an active student record to take this course.

    • If you have a "Student" tab in Ursa, skip to the "Registering for the Course" section below.
    • If you do not see a "Student" tab in Ursa, then you will need to do the following steps.

    First-Time or Inactive UNC Student

    If you have never been admitted to UNC or taken a course at UNC, or if you have not taken a course within the last 12 months, your student account must be activated.

    Complete the online Student Information Form. It may take up to 24 hours to process the Student Information Form.

    A confirmation email is sent once the student record has been created, and you should now have a "Student" tab in Ursa.

    Registering for the Course

    1. Sign into Ursa and go to the "Student" tab.
    2. Under "Registration and Grades" choose "Register, Add or Crop Classes."
    3. Choose the correct term and enter the CRN noted above.

  • Once You Register

    Dropping and Withdrawing

    If you wish to drop or withdraw from the course, you must do so on or before the deadline dates listed in the Course Basics box.

    • If you are registered for any other courses in the same academic term, you can drop or withdraw within your Ursa account.
    • If this is your only course this term, please contact the Office of the Registrar at registrar@unco.edu or 970-351-4862.

    It is your responsibility to know the drop and withdrawal deadlines and procedures.

    Billing and Payment for Your Course

    Tuition for this course is listed in the Course Basics box on this page. Any course materials costs (textbooks, digital access, etc.) would be a separate or additional expense.

    Billing notification will be sent to your Bearmail (student email) account when your bill is ready. If you have not activated your Bearmail, directions are in the directions for course registration and activation.

    • Please pay your bill by the end of the month in which it was received to avoid finance charges.
    • To view or pay your bill, log into Ursa and go to the Financial tab. You will not receive a bill in the mail; UNC has an eBill system.
