Maternal and Child Nutrition (Graduate)

Online Independent Study Course

Developmental stages, nutrient requirements, appropriate diet and eating behaviors for children from conception through school age. Nutrition related conditions of children and nutrition for the pregnant and lactating woman.


  • Eligibility

    Instructor Consent and Eligibility for Credit

    Students must get permission from the instructor (see the Contact Us or Course Basics sections on this page) to take this course. The instructor will determine permission and can provide an override. Once you receive confirmation from the instructor, register using the directions below.

    NOTE: you can not receive credit for this if you have previously completed FND 420 (the undergraduate version of this course)

    Graduate Students

    UNC Degree-Seeking Students

    Current UNC graduate students can register for this course.

    Non-Degree-Seeking Students

    Non-degree-seeking graduate status refers to a student who has earned at least a bachelor's degree and who either:

    • Has applied to UNC Graduate School and not yet been admitted or;
    • Wishes to take this graduate class but not pursue a degree.

    Please note, as a non-degree seeking student, you are not eligible for federal financial aid.

    Undergraduate Students

    This course is also available as an online undergraduate-level independent study course: FND 420.

    Eligibility by State

    At this time, UNC can serve online education to students from every state, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. However, we are not currently accepting students to our online offerings who reside in the CNMIs.

    Spring Enrollment Dates: January 11 - May 7, 2021

    Though you will have a full calendar year to complete this course, students registering by May 7, 2021, will have their courses count as part of Spring 2021 enrollment. Please note that Spring 2021 is the final term for the Independent Study courses. No enrollments will be allowed after May 7.

    Directions for Registering using the UNC Ursa System

    Once registered, you will receive a registration confirmation at your UNC BearMail address. This email will list the drop and withdrawal deadlines. It is your responsibility to know the drop and withdrawal deadlines and procedures.

    Note for UNC degree-seeking students: tuition for your Independent Study courses are over and above your regular campus tuition rates and schedule. Independent Study courses are not Colorado Opportunity Fund (COF) supported.

    • If you are an admitted UNC student, Independent Study courses are over and above your regular campus tuition rates and schedule.
    • Any course materials costs (textbooks, digital access, etc.) would be a separate or additional expense.

    Billing notification will be sent to your Bearmail (student email) account when your bill is ready. If you have not activated your Bearmail, directions are in the Directions for Registering.

    • Please pay your bill by the due date listed on your eBill to avoid service charges.
    • To view or pay your bill, log into Ursa and go to the Financial tab. You will not receive a bill in the mail; UNC has an eBill system.
